Awards and Recognitions

  • Padma Shri Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award of India. It is awarded yearly by the Government of India to its citizens to honour distinguished contributions in various spheres of activity including arts, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public life. Peruvanam Kuttan Marar was awarded this coveted honour on the eve of the 64th Republic Day of India, 2011.

  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Fellowship The Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademy honoured Peruvanam Kuttan Marar with the Academy Award in the year 2003 and Academy Fellowship in the year 2009.

  • Veerashringhala Traditionally Veerashringhala is a bracelet made of 40 grams of gold with the royal seal presented by the Maharaja, to selected individuals in appreciation of their outstanding contribution in different fields of human endeavour. With the disappearance of the rule by Royal families, the task of honouring individuals of outstanding achievements was taken over by social and cultural organizations. In the year 2001 the citizens of Cherpu, presented Peruvanam Kuttan Marar with a Veerashringhala (with a royal seal) at a huge assembly of artistes and art lovers.

  • Keli Award Keli is a cultural organization based in Mumbai, which has been active for the last 18 years for the preservation and propagation of the traditional classical arts of India. Keli has also honoured several celebrated artistes of the country with golden momentos. They include Padmavibhushan Pandit Ram Narayan, Padmabhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain, Padmabhushan Dr. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Padmabhushan Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, Padma Shri Kanak Rele and many other senior artistes. In this series of awards, Peruvanam Kuttan Marar received the Keli Award for the most promising Artiste in 1999, the Golden Conch in 2005 and Keli's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Rhythm music of Kerala, in 2008.

  • Arattupuzha Sri Sastha Award The history of rhythm music of Kerala is inextricably associated with the cultural history of the Arattupuzha temple which is 1428 years old. The temple's administrative committee selects the brightest star in the realm of rhythm music every year and confers on him a gold medal titled the ‘Sastha Award’. The selection is made by an expert committee of artistes and scholars of high caliber.

  • Other Awards and Recognitions
    In addition to these, he is the recipient of several other awards such as Sri Guruvayurappan Award, Kala Darpana Award, Nada Purnathrayee Award, Adaraneeyam, etc. He has also been honoured with a number of titles such as Kshetra Kala Ratnam (The jewel of temple arts), Mela Kala Chakravarti (The Emperor of rhythm ensembles), Vadyotama etc.
